Glacier Park, Montana via Amtrak

From Minot, North Dakota to Whitefish, Montana.

July 20 - 27, 2009

DAY 1  We'll begin our wonderful adventure to Glacier National Park with an included coffee and roll break. Our travels will take us into North Dakota for a lunch break on your own and an afternoon break en-route to our overnight in Minot. This evening we'll enjoy an included Welcome Dinner.

DAY 2  Early this morning we'll enjoy included breakfast, then we'll be transferred to the Amtrak station to board the Empire Builder for our full-day ride. You will be free today to enjoy lunch and dinner in the Dining Car or just get something lighter in the Snack Car. The Snack Car also has dome seating for great viewing. The day will be spent on the train relaxing and taking in the scenery as we cross North Dakota and enter Montana. At about 5:00 pm this evening we'll begin our ride around Glacier National Park viewing the spectacular mountains en-route to Whitefish, MT. Upon arrival we'll be transferred to our hotel for the night. You will then be free to refresh and get a good night's sleep. 

DAY 3  Following included breakfast at your leisure we'll head east to Lake McDonald Lodge on the western edge of Glacier National Park. Here we'll board our special Mini-coach with large viewing windows for a spectacular narrated "Road to the Sun" tour. You'll hear all about the Black Feet Indian Nation and the park. We'll make several stops including rest stops, photo stops, Logan Pass, Bird Woman Falls, Big Bend and Valley overlook en-route to the eastern side of the park. In Browning, MT you'll transfer back to our motorcoach and we'll head south to Great Falls, MT for our overnight. The evening will be free to relax and enjoy dinner on your own.

DAY 4  We'll head south after our included breakfast for a real highlight, our narrated cruise on the Missouri River through the "Gates of the Mountain", named by Meriwether Lewis as the Lewis and Clark expedition traveled through here. Here the cliffs rise 1200 feet above the river on both sides forming a canyon of natural wonders. Later we'll stop for a lunch break on your own, then continue south across the beautiful Big Sky Country of Montana. This afternoon we'll take a break en-route to our overnight at the western entrance to Yellowstone National Park in West Yellowstone, Montana. The remainder of the evening will be free to relax and have dinner on your own.

DAY 5  Today following included breakfast we'll tour through Yellowstone National Park. We'll drive the Grand Loop making several stops including Norris and Firehole River Geyser Basins, Mammoth Hot Springs Visitors Center, Canyon Village, Yellowstone Lake and Old Faithful. Late this afternoon we'll head out through the eastern entrance to our overnight in Cody, WY. The evening will be free to relax and have dinner on your own. 

 

 

 

DAY 6  This morning following included breakfast we'll head east across the Bighorn Mountains and then north back into Montana. Off to our right you will see the famous Little Bighorn Battlefield, the site of Custer's defeat. We'll then take a break and lunch stop on your own prior to heading into North Dakota and our overnight in Medora. After time to refresh we'll head to our included Pitchfork Fondue Dinner followed by the wonderful Medora Musical. Each year this professionally produced musical pays tribute to our 26th President Theodore Roosevelt.

DAY 7  Our morning starts with an included Chuckwagon Breakfast. Next we'll visit Theodore Roosevelt National Park prior to heading east, stopping for lunch on your own in Bismark, ND. This afternoon we'll take a break prior to arriving in Fargo, ND for our overnight. Following time to refresh we'll enjoy an included Farewell Dinner..

DAY 8  After included breakfast we'll head to Moorhead, MN to visit the Hjemkomst Interpretive Center. You'll see the replica of the 76-foot hand-built Viking Ship that made the 6,000 mile crossing of the Atlantic in 1982. Later we'll head back southeast across Minnesota stopping for a lunch break on your own prior to arriving back in the Twin Cities late this afternoon.
